"You said it was bullet-proof, and it's not!"
26 November 2009 @ 04:16 am
I seem to recall being told once that a lot of Catholics subscribe to the view that personal names have power, and so they will often have two names as a result: one given to them at birth, and another given later that they keep secret, lest it not be used against them by those with less-than-honorable intent.

In an effort to confirm that I had been told this, I googled the matter and came up empty. Does anyone know if there's validity to this, or am I making up "something I heard once" with help from the Dresden Files?

Oh, and by the way, Happy Thanksgiving!!! May your Thanksgiving dinners be delicious and nonthreatening. *G*

I've decided to partake in a running commentary for tonight's episode of Supernatural, "Abandon All Hope". Here we go!

MEGA-spoilers ALL over this. Seriously. ALL OVER IT. So don't click if you don't want the episode to be spoiled for you. )

This is an awesome meme and I want to do it again. If anyone knows where I can find similar memes with different scenarios, please tell me! :D

1. Write down the names of 10 characters.

2. Write a fic of fifteen words or less for every prompt, using the characters determined by the numbers. Do NOT read the prompts before you do step 1.

1. 10th Doctor (Doctor Who)
2. Aang (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
3. Alan Shore (Boston Legal)
4. Bob (The Dresden Files, TV version)
5. Takato (Digimon Tamers)
6. Denny Crane (Boston Legal)
7. Sheldon (The Big Bang Theory)
8. Castiel (Supernatural)
9. Aziraphale (Good Omens)
10. Dean Winchester (Supernatural)

I suggest you consider writing down your 10 before you click this if you're interested in doing it yourself, but it's not necessary. It's just that the meme's quite fun! :D )

I am filling out an application I have not found much joy in filling out, but am keeping myself going with the declaration that I will let myself watch Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (for the first time in years, and also the first time I'll have a super-love for Star Trek: The Original Series backing up the viewing) when the application is completely done.

This is, of course, how everything important in this world gets done. Don't want to do something? Too bad! Do it anyway, because you can watch Star Trek when your "free time" returns to you! Hurray!

The Big Bang Theory icon is very appropriate, yes.

"The weakest living creature, by concentrating his powers on a single object, can accomplish something. The strongest, by dispensing his over many, may fail to accomplish anything. The drop, by continually falling, bores its passage through the hardest rock. The hasty torrent rushes over it with hideous uproar, and leaves no trace behind." ~Thomas Carlyle, essayist and historian (1795-1881)

I have often wondered where those two doors lead. Surely someone has thought to fix at least the door on the left, whose knob seems to have shattered the wood so thoroughly? But alas, for years, this is how they've stood.

Ah, but what the hey. They're still pretty, though perhaps not in the usual way.

I've begun to watch Star Trek: TOS. As a long-time Trek-fan, there is really no excuse for my not having done this sooner. My conclusion? It is good TV! People falling in funny ways, melodrama, Kirk's grin, Spock's eyebrow, Bones' right-sided smirk, the occasional lines that seem to corner an existential truth, the last few minutes of "Amok Time"...ah, I could go on. This. Show. Is. AWESOME.

I find myself quite liking the K/S relationship. Heh, no surprise there, given the fandom reaction to them that's obvious even to (I think) many non-Trekkies. I love the mesh of one character's logic complementing another character's impulsive joy, and vice versa. Maybe that's strange. *shrugs* At least for this moment, I don't seem to mind. :D

I so love laundry day. It's that amazing day when I suddenly have more clean clothes to choose from than a Spongebob shirt and whatever pair of pants isn't speckled with dirt or smells like some kind of floor cleaner. When the sheets and blankets are also washed, that means there's less cat hair sticking to the sheets when I go to sleep! It's spectacular!

As of this moment, I am lit up by my bright yellow Spongebob shirt and and am waiting for the 5th episode of Torchwood, season 3. For the moments in-between laundry and Torchwood, a friend lent me her copy of the new Nicolas Cage movie, Knowing, and I figure, what the hey, it's not like I have to pay to watch it, so I might as well. In all honesty, I'm actually kind of curious about the movie. In premise, at least.

So! Clean clothes, new movie, and Torchwood to cap it all off? That right there is the makings of a well-planned night. :D

I really don't see how this ONE word could be a spoiler, but what the hey. I don't want to step on any toes here. :P )

That was---whoa!

I gotta' watch the second one, like, NOW. Or I might start hyperventilating or something.

Gyeh!

I finally got my hands on Let the Right One In and am watching it tonight. This may be a really, really stupid decision because I have quite a few things scheduled to do in the morning and if this movie scares me badly enough, sleep may not come easily tonight.

Knowing this, I'm watching the movie anyway!

Aaaahhhh, but even the menu screen is eerie... *whimpers* I probably will lose sleep over this movie. Heh. But hey! Some amusement to be found: from the introductory movie previews on the DVD, I'm thinking that Special (RX): Specioprin Hyrdochloride (trailer linked there) is going to be a hilarious movie and I'd quite like to see it. And GASP, is that Harry Blackthorne sitting between present!guy and future!guy in that car towards the very end of the commercial (at 1:26)!? Definitely looks like him! I am intrigued...

Meme
1) Comment and I'll pick one of your LJ interests and make you an icon.
2) You have no say in what I make.
3) Put this in your journal so I can do the same. (tho thats optional lol!)

If you don't want an icon but are still willing to give a prompt (of course to spite the rules of the meme that declare you have no say in the icon's creation), I'll accept it gladly so long as it doesn't scare the bejeebers out of me. Anonymous commenters welcome to participate, though I don't see why there'd be many of those in my tiny little corner of the 'Net.

I made the icon attached to this post, so that's about where my icon-making skillz are at. You've been warned! I can start making these icons next Thursday, if this pretty ol' meme gets any bites. :)

To a totally awesome, wicked cool, and overall fantastic individual whose birthday is today,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, [info]joonscribble !!!! XDDD

I hope you've been able to recover from all of the over-studying you've had to do lately so you can celebrate in your own way. You work so hard! It's quite admirable. Today you should eat cake! Or at least some other tasty food you like. Fill in those schoolbooks with cookie crumbs. Bwahaha! After all, that's what birthdays are for, aren't they? :D

*hugs!*

A bit of calculating has revealed to me that if I am to confront this upcoming spring semester with a decent amount of effectiveness, my bedtime would probably benefit from becoming midnight or earlier, and consistently remain so. But oohh, that's pretty difficult to fathom. *chews lip worriedly*

Also? That Supernatural promo commercial with the rope is making me antsy. *fidgets* Yeeaarrrg! Why is there so little post-ep. 4.10 fanfic!? It seems to me this might help to fill the void a little while I await the show's return! *fidgets some more*

Why have I not started wrapping gifts yet? *slaps forehead* Graah!

[Incidentally, I might benefit from an icon that depicts "Steadily Growing Panic" instead of the currently used "Overwhelming, Face-To-The-Ground Epic FAIL moment." *makes mental note to further consider this later*]

Also, the gifts I probably SHOULD be wrapping are scattered randomly across my bed, meaning they must be dealt with before I can easily sleep there. Has it come to the point at which my procrastinating ways have caused me to sleep on the floor? Alas, great sadness if that be true! I suppose time will tell.
